Insurance coverage for Bicycling

November 30, 2009

Many Cape Cod bicycling enthusiasts hop on their bike and cycle for miles at a time without giving much thought to how they may or may not be protected from a careless uninsured or underinsured motorist. We have all heard of bicyclists injured when struck by a vehicle, what we haven't heard is the "Rest of the Story."

The quickest and easiest way to obtain protection is from your personal automobile policy. You have two coverage parts that you should review: Part 3 (Uninsured Motorists) and Part 12 (Underinsured Motorists). You can increase this coverage to $250,000 per person, or to $500,000 with select insurers. Some Personal Umbrella Policies will extend this coverage an additional $1,000,000. In the event you are seriously injured by an "uninsured" or "underinsured" motorist you could file a claim against your own automobile and or umbrella insurer (if permitted) up to the limits of liability.

Review this important coverage part with your Agent. You should at least purchase the same amount of insurance protection for you and your family as you do for the general public.
